About
“The Base and Meridian marker, located on the southeast corner of Temple Square, marks the geographic center from which Salt Lake City was planned. Shortly after Latter-day Saint pioneers arrived in 1847, surveyors selected this point as the reference for naming and numbering the city’s streets.
From this location, the city’s orderly layout took shape, providing structure and direction for a growing settlement. It became a practical foundation for building homes, neighborhoods, and community life.
This marker reflects how early Saints built with order and faith, literally centering the city on the temple—the house of the Lord, Jesus Christ.”
