About
Surrounding the central figure, the monument includes additional sculptures that broaden the story. A Native American figure and a fur trapper represent people who lived in and moved through the region before the pioneers arrived. A relief panel depicting a pioneer family reflects the everyday experience of settlement, while inscriptions list members of the original pioneer company and the tools they brought with them.
Created by sculptor Cyrus Edward Dallin, the monument was displayed in the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Today it is a reminder of the faith and hope of many people who are connected to the early history of Salt Lake City.
