Christ Carrying the Cross
The Christ Carrying the Cross statue on Temple Square commemorates the Savior’s path to Calvary. Though declared innocent by the Roman governor, Jesus Christ was condemned by the crowd. Soldiers mocked Him, scourged Him, and placed a heavy cross upon His shoulders.
As He carried the cross, many people followed and wept. Even in suffering cruelty and rejection, Jesus Christ responded with mercy. From the cross, He prayed for those who crucified Him, saying, “Father, forgive them.” After enduring the agony of crucifixion, He declared, “It is finished,” and willingly gave His life.
This statue is a solemn reminder of Christ’s love and sacrifice. It shows that through His suffering and death, Jesus Christ fulfilled God’s plan and offers forgiveness, endurance, and the eternal hope to all.
