The Christ with Mary and Martha statue depicts a tender New Testament moment. When Jesus Christ visited their home, Mary sat at His feet to listen and learn, while Martha worked to serve Him. Feeling overwhelmed, Martha expressed concern that she was left to labor alone. The Savior responded with gentle instruction, teaching that learning from Him was “needful.”
Both Mary and Martha continued to follow the Savior faithfully. Later, Martha testified, “I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God” (John 11:27), showing her deep faith and devotion.
This scene invites the viewer to reflect on personal priorities. While service and responsibility are important, the statue reminds us that lasting peace and joy come as we center our lives on Jesus Christ and His teachings.

Enjoy a quiet moment with a replica of Thorvaldsen’s Christus in a reverent pavilion overlooking the Salt Lake Temple. The space includes “living artwork” of the Savior’s life and a short audio presentation offered every 30 minutes. The statue is in the west pavilion of the Visitors’ Center.
